RenaissanceRe to acquire crop insurance underwriter Agro National

Friday said it has agreed to acquire Agro National, a managing general underwriter of crop insurance. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The company said Agro National will become a part of the Glencoe Group, which conducts the individual risk business of RenaissanceRe. RenaissanceRe expects the transaction to be completed in the second quarter.

The high-level group headed by
Commission member Anwarul Hoda recommended that health insurance premia be made
eligible for tax exemptions, to increase the penetration of health insurance
products, especially in rural areas. The group said a separate
exemption limit could be considered for investments in dedicated close-ended
infrastructure mutual funds and long-term bank deposits. Further,
the group attempted to make out a case for fiscal incentives for agriculture
insurance, underscoring the importance of risk mitigation in agriculture, which
is essential for spurring investments in this low growth area. At
present, savings are encouraged through tax exemption under Section 80(C) of the
Income tax Act.

FSC brings loss adjusters, insurance pros under umbrella

- File The Financial Services Commission, the regulatory authority for the insurance industry, is on a drive to bring all players in the sector, including loss adjusters and insurance consultants, under its formal jurisdiction. Until now, the FSC, has primarily focused on policing the firms that actually offer insurance coverage and other front-line operators, such as brokers and agents. The Insurance Act of 2001 requires the registration of adjusters and consultants. “The registration of adjusters and insurance consultants was deferred until the registration of sale representatives, brokers and agents was completed and resources could be deployed to do the research and consultations required,” said Nadene Newsome, the FSC’s communications manager.

The Autoline Group purchased MA Leer, an insurance and financial brokerage in Keady in Co Armagh. It follows Newry-based Autoline’s acquisition of Tony Roden Insurance in Downpatrick last year. Autoline hopes further acquisitions will result in a province-wide network of sales offices. MA Leer was set up in the mid-1980s by Michael Leer. The family-run firm built up a strong base of diverse customers in Keady, Armagh and the surrounding rural areas.
