Foreclosure crisis vexes government
Washington Post, United States
The mortgage market’s troubles have proved to be far more serious and intractable than most in government or the private sector had predicted a year ago. "We are behind the curve. We are falling behind," Sheila Bair, head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. told a Senate hearing Thursday. "There has been some progress, but it’s not been enough, and we need to act. And we need to act quickly, and we need to act dramatically to have more wide-scale, systematic (loan) modifications.

California employers may see 5% rise in workers’ comp insurance
Los Angeles Times, CA
By Marc Lifsher October 25, 2008 Reporting from Sacramento — Many of California’s 1. 3 million employers may pay higher premiums for workers’ compensation insurance next year, after five years of steady rate decreases. After analyzing costs in the $12-billion market, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner on Friday told more than 200 insurers that they would not be out of line if they raised rates by 5% for policies written after Jan.

Batswana ripped off in yet another insurance scam
Sunday Standard, Botswana
2008 7:43:52 P The credibility of Botswana’s insurance industry has been blighted by revelations that a number of insurance agencies in Botswana are conducting bogus certification courses and operating illegally, sparking fears that scores of industry players may not be qualified for their jobs. The Sunday Standard is aware of two companies operating in Gaborone and Francistown which are registered as insurance agencies but operating as training institutions. The Francistown agency is said to be operating from the managing director’s house in Block 9. According to Botswana law, members of staff of any company that practices in the insurance industry, including banks and financial institutions, must have a certificate of proficiency (COP) in insurance. While most insurance companies have been taking COP examinations from the Insurance Institutes of South Africa through the Botswana Accountancy College, a group of Zimbabwean nationals have penetrated the local insurance industry and are reportedly making a killing, selling bogus COP exams to desperate Batswana.

“It gives me great peace of mind to know if my sons are sick, I could go to the doctor and not drown in bills, or be told they can’t see you because you have no insurance,” said Smith, 28, who works full-time as a secretary, earning 50 cents above Michigan’s hourly minimum wage. Eight years ago, oldest son Cameron, then two months old, was hospitalized off and on for five months for a viral blood infection that nearly killed him and left him blind in one eye. “It was a pretty scary road.
