With revenues falling at the same time that more people are losing their jobs and private health coverage states already have pared their programs and many are looking at deeper cuts for the coming year. Already 19 states and the District of Columbia have lowered payments to hospitals and nursing homes eliminated coverage for some treatments and forced some recipients out of the insurance program completely. Many are halting payments for health-care services not required by the federal government such as physical therapy eyeglasses hearing aids and hospice care. A few states are requiring poor patients to chip in more toward their care.

Fire district expands coverage qualifies for better insurance rates

The department received notification that it had qualified for a new rating from the state offices of the fire marshal and insurance commissioner. The new 7 rating should equate to insurance savings for fire district property owners according to Chief Joe Lupton. He said the potential savings would depend on which insurance company and the type of coverage a homeowner has. “The best thing is for the individuals living in the fire district to contact their insurance company” he said.

Lakewood ex-insurance broker sentenced on bribery theft charges

Alfred Fontanilla Abad 65 pleaded guilty Dec. 16 to both charges in Downey Superior Court and was sentenced the same day according to state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. According to investigators the owner of a personnel temp agency who had been a longtime business client of Abad’s paid him about $14000 in 2005 for professional and liability insurance coverage. When she did not receive a policy from Abad and got the run-around when she questioned him the victim contacted the insurance company through which Abad had arranged her coverage in the past according to the California Department of Insurance.
