SCHIPing away at the need for health insurance
San Francisco Chronicle  USA
This time he said would be different. And this week the House of Representatives is determined to prove Daschle right. It is scheduled to take up an extension of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) as the Kennedy-Hatch initiative is called so that 10 million kids can get health insurance. Getting more children covered before Congress starts wrangling over the larger health care bill is good politics and the right thing to do. Congress needs to act anyway because the program expires March 31. It might as well act fast and act generously. The SCHIP bill is unfinished business from the Bush years and Democrats have no better way to show and quickly how different their approach to government will be from the style and priorities that prevailed during the outgoing president’s term.

Windstorm fund a leading issue at Capitol
Houston Chronicle United States
When lawmakers convene Tuesday they’ll face the financial devastation left by the Category 2 storm that walloped the upper Gulf Coast on Sept. 13 devastating Galveston and nearby counties. They’ll look to restructure the state’s windstorm insurance association which is filling in the gap left by private insurers who stopped issuing policies in some Gulf coast counties and consider whether to put money into a state disaster fund that Galveston officials found out the hard way was empty. “The Legislature was wise in setting up the disaster fund but we were cheap in not funding it” said Democratic Rep. Craig Eiland of Galveston. “A fund that doesn’t have any money in it is pretty much like no fund at all. verall Ike costs could sock state government with a potential $6 billion to $8 billion bill said House Appropriations Chairman Warren Chisum.

Next Up For Tebow? Insurance
CNBC Englewood Cliffs
Lerner is based in Gainesville Fla. which has helped him insure about 20 University of Florida players in recent years. Lerner said he’d recommend that Tebow take out $5 million in insurance. It’s not the maximum a college player has ever taken out but it’s probably the coverage Tebow could get. “I’d say he can get $3 million against the loss of NFL income if he got hurt” Lerner said “and then another $2 million in off-the-field coverage. ” It’s not like Tebow would lose all of his endorsement and autograph potential if he gets hurt while playing next year but there would be loss of value and he probably can’t become the greatest college player of all time without another Heisman or national championship to his name. Lerner said $5 million worth of coverage would cost Tebow about $50000.
